With everyone in different leagues currently the Copa is in limbo. Once we have an idea what's happening we'll update.
TUCSON, AZ (Wednesday, May 6, 2015) – The Sandianistas (Albuquerque Sol supporters), the Mob Squad (Las Vegas Mobsters supporters), and the Cactus Pricks (FC Tucson supporters), are proud to announce the creation of the “Copa Frontera”, a yearly cup competition between the Las Vegas Mobsters, Albuquerque Sol, and FC Tucson. The winning team’s supporter group will get to keep the “Copa Frontera” for the entire year, until a new champion is crowned during next season.
The cup in large part was formed thanks to the front offices of Albuquerque and Tucson. After creating a front-office-made trophy in the “Southwestern Showdown,” the Albuquerque and Tucson supporters were disappointed to see Las Vegas excluded from the front-office-created competition. All three cities are within a seven-hour drive of each other and all three cities are viewed as the capitals of soccer in their respective states. The cup was also created with the hope that during future seasons, the teams will create a fair and balanced schedule, where each team plays each other twice during the regular season, not just once or three times.
“We feel like this is a great way to promote the supporters culture in the southwest,” said The Cactus Pricks. “The cup will once again cement the status that Vegas, Albuquerque, and Tucson are the three top cities in the southwest when it comes to soccer.”
“We are thrilled to be part of this competition from its inception,” said The Mob Squad. “The Southwest is a soccer hotbed, both player and supporter-wise, and we can’t wait to see the Copa Frontera grow in prestige in the years to come.”
“Rivalries among supporters groups are a naturally occurring phenomenon in soccer and the Copa Frontera comes directly from that,” said the Sandianistas. “Being able to compete against our closest geographic rivals in FC Tucson and the Las Vegas Mobsters for a supporters-driven trophy is special, and we look forward to our Sol bringing the Copa Frontera to us regularly in the years to come.”
The team that earns the most points over three match-days will be crowned champions of Copa Frontera
The schedule for this year’s Copa Frontera is as follows:
Matchday #1 Albuquerque Sol FC vs Las Vegas Mobsters Saturday May 13, 2017
Matchday #2 Las Vegas Mobsters vs FC Tucson Saturday June 10, 2017
Matchday #3 FC Tucson vs Albuquerque Sol FC Saturday June 24, 2017
Tiebreaking procedures will be as follows:
- Goal differential in matches between the tied teams
- Goals scored in matches between the tied teams
- Goal differential in all Copa Frontera matches
- Total goals scored in all Copa Frontera matches
