We started things off Thursday against BYU in Provo. It was a spirited affair as one would expect from two teams who have developed a bit of a rivalry over the past few seasons. While the first half was decent but uneventful things heated up significantly in the second 45.
A BYU goal by Payden Pemberton in the 58th minute had the Mobsters scrambling for an equalizer. And thirty minutes and much physical play later they got it when Josh Guzman fired an absolute rocket of a shot to the upper-right corner that beat BYU GK Richard LeSueur in the game's final gasps. A huge draw that felt like a win.
The boy's second game in three days came Saturday as the Mobsters traveled to San Francisco to take on SFCFC at historic Kezar Stadium.
Things got off to a fast start for Las Vegas as less than two minutes in Jackson Collins scored a beautiful headed goal courtesy of a Naia Graham floating cross and Julian Portugal corner kick service.
The second half would see more of the same as Las Vegas would score early once again. A long throw-in by Milan Popovic in City's end found the feet of Esteban Berumen who launched a fantastic volley that found the back of the net to give Las Vegas a 2-0 lead.
With the win vs SFCFC the Mobsters not only defeated the team who was sitting top of the table, but also gave City their first (official) loss of the season.
And that brings us where we are now. First place in the division. Which the Mobsters have never done in their short history.
Now, a few caveats here:
Every team in the division has games in hand on us (anywhere from 1-3 matches),so at some point everyone will catch up.
There are only four points separating 1st and last place in the Central Pacific Division. Odds are the lead will change a bunch more over the course of the season. But right now...right now..we're up top. And it feels pretty dang good.
This Friday the boys are back at Green Valley taking on the Orange County Blues U-23 team. There's only one more home Mobsters match after this so if you haven't been yet now is the time. Come on out, sing with us, and support Las Vegas soccer!
