American Animal/Mascot Style- Hammerheads, Riverhounds, Rhinos, Rowdies, Toros (to name some USL clubs fitting this category) are of the more traditional animal/mascot names that have been a staple of American teams of all sports for decades upon decades. They have their place (minor-league baseball was made for these names) but don't necessarily think they work in soccer. Unless they can actually reference the city/region in an interesting way...
Shock Value- Now we bring this one up because it's what the Mobsters were going with with their name. And it worked in the beginning with a fair amount of online press which probably wouldn't have happened of they had announced as Las Vegas FC. The name eventually bit them in the rear as (to hear them tell it) the name stopped them from getting any significant sponsorship. From what we understand there won't be any gambling/mob references as it relates to the team so this shouldn't be an issue.
Now we've been told the LVPC folks have up to five names trademarked/reserved and we know that Las Vegas Lights is one and possibly LVFC as well. Lights has grown on us a lot and LVFC, while not exactly lighting the world of originality ablaze is perfectly fine. And who knows? Someone might come out of nowhere with a home-run name. We'll see..
