Things started out well enough; tailgate was great as always, the Fuego's supporters group Fire Squad Fresno joined us pre-game and they were good people. All was going well. Then the game started..
And it was a very tight match. The Fuego had the better of possession but the Mobsters more than held their own.
Until the 88th minute.
That was when Christian Chaney (lPDL goals leader this season) scored with a minute and change left in regulation to give the Fuego a 0-1 lead. The Mobsters almost immediately score an equalizer courtesy of Mario Erpel.
It was a thing of beauty.
The entire Red End simultaneously went hoarse from cheering.
Until the pass was ruled offsides. And all the air at Green Valley got sucked out.
For the record, the pass was NOT OFFSIDES. Coach Barron was sent off for arguing the terrible call. And the boys were just deflated after that and the game ended 0-1 to the division-leading Fuego.
We should've gotten a point out of this match. What's worse is we could've prevented first-place Fresno from getting three points which would've kept us in the playoff hunt but we just weren't able to pull it off.
So with the results of the weekend the Mobsters are now in fourth-place; eight points behind Fresno and three points behind second-place BYU, who were in last place just a couple weeks back. This league is nuts.
The Mobsters have a bye this week then go to Albuquerque to start their final matches of the season. Gonna be rough with all remaining matches away from home but these guys are resilient so we have confidence. Finish strong, boys!
